A vista to wake up to as I started this morning’s ride.
I met another cross-country rider. He is from England (hence the flag) and is riding unsupported as well. He’s riding from NYC to SF in support of MS. He’s been able to make contacts with friends and friends of friends through social media who are taking him in for a shower and a bed most of the way. Diane and I both enjoyed taking some time to chat with him. Great guy!!
Charcoal kilns were used extensively in mining districts of the West. Charcoal would burn at 2,000 degrees, the temperature necessary for mills and smelters to process the gold and silver. Local forests would be stripped bare as the wood was used in the kiln to produce the charcoal. Skilled colliers would operate the kilns which could contain 100 cords of wood and take up to 15 to 20 days to burn down and cool, producing the charcoal.
Today’s ride was a tough one due to pretty much a constant head wind. I’m able to take a day off tomorrow to let the body recoup from three pretty tough days in the saddle.
Postscript: On this day, June 26, 2022, the Colorado Avalanche won the Stanley Cup!
