Today was a wet one. Lots of good news though. A smooth old railroad grade for over 50 miles. A gradual grade up or down. Able to develop a nice pace to average just about 12 mph. What wind there was actually was from the south-west for a change. Even gave a little push. Although I’ve only had one day in the 80’s, from what I hear, cooler days even with the rain are better. I would agree.
I have always enjoyed the history of trains throughout the development of America. Since I was on the Rails to Trails route, I think it is time I shared with you some of the many historic train cars.
Riding past preserved historic building such as these made today’s ride interesting and very close to being fun.
I believe these are grain cars. Or at least they were on a track that passed under grain silos and elevator. The string of cars goes on for miles. Yet when looking at the wheels, there is copper colored rust where metallic signs of use should be. As has arisen before on this adventure; Why and what is their story.
There were many places of historic interest throughout this stretch of a rail system of yesterday.
The only real hard part of today’s ride was navigating through Columbus/Reynoldsburg, Ohio, especially after such a wonderful ride on the rec path system. I’d certainly trade 10 miles through a city for 15 miles of rural riding.
Tomorrow heading to Cambridge, Ohio.
